BHSCT - Band 7 Custody Nurse Practitioner

The Belfast Trust delivers integrated health and social care to approximately 340,000 citizens in the greater Belfast area and provides the majority of regional specialist services for the population of Northern Ireland (1.8 million people). With an annual budget of almost £1.3bn and a workforce of over 20,000, we are also a Trust with teaching hospitals and have strong links with our local university partners providing high quality training for health care professionals across all disciplines.

The Belfast Health and Care Trust had led on the Custody Healthcare transformation pathfinder at Musgrave custody suite since October 2018, with the view to roll out across all custody suites in the near future.

The Trust is now seeking to appoint highly motivated custody nurse practitioners who are keen to develop custody healthcare in Northern Ireland in conjunction with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The PSNI have statutory responsibility for people detained in their custody and the care and treatment of those individuals is set out in Police and Criminal Evidence Order 1989 (PACE) and Codes of Practice.

People in police care often have wide and complex healthcare needs and more often than not, are some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

• The custody nurse practitioner will autonomously assess, diagnose, treat or refer those detainees within their scope of practice and will be committed to developing their knowledge, skills and competence to meet the ever-changing needs of the service
• Provide an effective nursing service to the custody suite, conducting clinical assessments, identifying and implementing appropriate interventions, collecting forensic samples, provide advice and guidance and maintaining detailed accurate records
• In conjunction with the lead nurse, develop and promote health care services in police custody suites in Northern Ireland
• Ensure that health care provision in the custody environment is of an ‘equivalent’ standard to that provided in the wider community

• Part 1 Adult Nursing on NMC Register
• 5 years post registration experience with 3 years’ experience in:
  
  Acute or Emergency Care/Primary Care
• Course in General Forensic Medicine (GFM) or willing to complete within the next 6 months
• Hold a current full driving license which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment
• (This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post)
• Health assessment module or willing to undertake and successfully complete the Qualification within a timescale as agreed by the Lead Nurse Custody Healthcare
• NMC recorded Non-Medical prescribing qualification or willing to undertake and successfully complete the Qualification within a timescale as agreed by the Lead Nurse Custody Healthcare
