Lay Chairperson (Designate), Solicitors Complaints Committee.

Remuneration: £20,000 per annum plus Sitting Fee (under review).

The Law Society of Northern Ireland is the professional body for the Solicitor profession with over 6,000 members, of whom circa 3,000 are in practice in the private, corporate, and public sectors in Northern Ireland.

The Legal Complaints and Regulation Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 provides for a new Solicitors Complaints Committee (SCC) to handle complaints against solicitors arising from the provision of professional services. The Lay Chairperson (Designate) will provide strategic leadership and direction to the Solicitors Complaints Committee through a period of change and provide a leadership style that ensures the Committee work collectively to adjudicate complaints to the highest possible standard in line with the relevant statutory and regulatory framework.

The person appointed as Lay Chairperson (Designate) will have a background in regulatory, consumer services or complaints management at a strategic leadership level and will display high standards of integrity and probity, both within and outside of Committee sittings. The successful candidate is also expected to be independent in character and judgement, able to generate trust among Committee colleagues.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate for the role will take up post early in 2025 and on commencement will support the design and delivery of the new complaints process.

The term of appointment is 3 years with the possibility of reappointment for a further 3 years following review.
