We are currently recruiting for a Staff Officer based in Belfast. The successful candidates will be required to start once the vetting paperwork, ANI clearance has been completed.

Duration: 6 months with a possibility of extension

Rate of pay: £19.59

Hours of work: 9 to 5 Monday to Friday 37 hours

Key Responsibilities
  • The post will support the Head of Sign Language Policy and Legislation Branch to develop Best Practice in Guidance for the NI Sign Language legislation and, to contribute to the development of outcomes and actions for the refresh of the Sign Language Framework Strategy ahead of a future public consultation.
  • Main duties include working and engaging with key stakeholders in the Sign Language Sector/Deaf Community, public bodies and, Executive departments to develop outcomes and actions to achieve these outcomes for the refresh of the Sign Language Framework and to agree best practice in guidance for public bodies to improve access to public services for the Deaf community.
  • Liaising with NI Sign Language sector and Deaf community to receive feedback on the Sign Language Framework refresh and providing regular updates on the progress of the Sign Language Bill and to Deaf community through BSL and ISL.
  • Provide advice and support to the Department in its chair and secretariat support roles to the cross-departmental/Deaf sector forum, the Sign Language Partnership Group.
Essential Criteria applicants must have:
  • Natural fluency in British Sign Language (BSL) and/or Irish Sign Language (ISL), preferably both, and an in-depth knowledge and experience of d/Deaf culture in Northernli>
  • A Signature Level 6 qualification (or equivalent) in BSL or ISL
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in Sign Language Policy within public and private/charitable organisations
  • Proof of 5 GCSEs English and Maths grade C or above or the equivalent.

    Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
    Excellent communication skills.
    Proven ability to use own initiative.
