Casualty Underwriter (UK Commercial Lines)

OverviewOur client, a leading international insurer within the commercial lines market, is seeking a Casualty Underwriter to join its established UK underwriting team.
This is a market-facing role offering ownership of a defined book of business and the opportunity to build out new trading relationships across the regional broker market. The successful candidate will join a highly regarded underwriting team known for its technical depth, strong broker relationships, and commercial expertise.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Casualty or Property & Casualty Underwriter seeking greater autonomy, portfolio ownership, and the ability to influence trading strategy within a collaborative and high-performing environment.
Responsibilities- Underwrite Casualty risks in accordance with the agreed Business Plan and delegated underwriting authority.
- Manage and develop a portfolio of new and existing business to achieve profitable growth.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, customers, and internal stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development and execution of trading strategy aligned to business objectives.
- Apply technical underwriting expertise to assess complex risks and deliver commercially sound decisions.
- Ensure compliance with reinsurance strategy to manage exposure and optimise portfolio performance.
- Adhere to underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal governance frameworks.
- Maintain accurate records and exposure management across underwriting systems.
- Monitor market conditions and underwriting cycle trends to inform pricing and risk selection.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, best practice development, and continuous improvement initiatives within the team.
- Proven experience in Casualty or Property & Casualty underwriting within the insurance sector.
- Strong understanding of underwriting profit drivers and long-term portfolio strategy.
- Proficiency in Excel and underwriting systems, with the ability to analyse data and modelled outputs.
- Solid understanding of legal, regulatory, and risk profiling requirements.
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills, particularly within broker-facing environments.
- Excellent prioritisation and relationship management skills.
- Ability to operate autonomously while contributing positively to team performance.
- Commercial awareness and market cycle understanding.
- 30 days annual leave, with the option to purchase up to 2 additional days.
