Professional Duties
  • Exercise general professional duties as circumstances may require (e.g., employed under the direction of the principal or the board).
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons, teach pupils in accordance with their educational needs, set and mark pupils’ work, and assess, record, and report on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and of any class or group; provide advice and guidance on educational, social matters, further education and careers; make relevant records and reports.
  • Communicate and consult with parents; cooperate with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors; participate in meetings arranged for these purposes.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for individuals and groups, subject to confidentiality.
  • Participate, if required, in staff development and performance review schemes; review teaching methods and programmes; attend further training and professional development as a teacher; advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on developing courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, safeguard health and safety when pupils are on school premises or in authorised activities elsewhere.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils for examinations, recording and reporting such assessments, and supervising pupils during examinations.
  • Contribute to the selection, professional development and induction of other teachers; coordinate or manage the work of other teachers; perform administrative tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions; manage support staff, order and allocate equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies, register pupil attendance, and supervise pupils regardless of the time of the duties.
  • Adhere to fixed working days and hours, taking required breaks; supervise cover for absent teachers under enrolment limits; avoid teaching more than the statutory maximum hours in any week.
Qualifications and Experience (Essential Criteria)
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared for teaching English as the main subject.
  • Have at least 6 months of experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 (practice may be included).
  • Have at least 6 months of experience teaching English at Key Stage 4 (practice may be included).
  • Demonstrate current experience of subject‑specific pedagogical approaches, including the inclusion of digital technology, to support and challenge all pupils, including those with special educational needs.
  • Demonstrate experience of developing positive relationships for learning with pupils.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
Essential Criteria (Interview)
  • Knowledge and understanding of assessment approaches that promote effective teaching and student progress, including for pupils with special educational needs.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils’ achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member and to motivate self and others.
  • Evidence of how experience and approach reflect the school’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience teaching Media Studies at Key Stage 4/5.
  • Experience teaching English Literature at Key Stage 4/5.
