JOB TITLE

Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO

Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching, setting and marking pupils’ work.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • Promoting pupil progress and well‑being, providing advice and guidance to pupils.
  • Communicating with parents and external parties as required.
  • Participating in meetings and professional development schemes.
  • Maintaining good order, discipline and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety.
  • Participating in public examination arrangements and related assessment activities.
  • Co‑ordinating or managing other teachers’ work and supporting the wider school team.
  • Assisting colleagues with the planning, monitoring and support of quality teaching.
  • Performing administrative and organisational tasks related to curriculum and pastoral functions.
  • Assisting with school‑wide initiatives such as school trips, religious education and ICT.
  • Managing time according to the school's attendance, breaks and the full‑time teacher schedule.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
  • Teaching qualification acceptable for teaching in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland. Must be valid at the closing date of applications.
  • Registration with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before taking up the post.
  • Minimum of one year paid teaching experience in Year 5, 6 or 7 within the last six years.
  • Demonstrable experience in effective classroom strategies supporting all pupils, including those with SEN.
  • Ability to create and sustain a high‑quality learning environment that promotes engagement, positive behaviour and measurable progress.
  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy, the SEND Code of Practice, a range of teaching strategies, information technology in learning, and current assessment methods.
  • Effective teaching, classroom management and inclusive learning skills.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems, collaborate with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Evidence that experience and approach reflect the school’s values and ethos.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience in Year 7.
  • Experience in coordinating Religious Education (RE) and/or ICT across a school.
  • Experience coordinating school trips across a range of year groups, ensuring safe, well‑organised, and educational experiences.

WORK HOURS
  • Full‑time teachers available for 195 working days (not more than 190 teaching days) and 1,265 hours a year, exclusive of off‑school preparation and travel.
  • Maximum of 25 hours of teaching per week in a primary or special school; 23.5 hours in a secondary school.
  • Regular breaks: at least 30 minutes between 12.00–14.00 pm (12.00–14.30 pm for nursery teams).
