CASS Elementary School

RSU 71 is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and student-centered Special Education Life Skills Teacher to support students with diverse learning needs. The Life Skills Teacher will provide individualized instruction focused on functional academics, social-emotional development, independent living skills, and career readiness to prepare students for successful post‑school outcomes.

Life Skills Classroom - K-4

(#286 or #282 Certification Required)

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Provide instruction in functional academics (reading, writing, math) aligned with students’ IEP goals
  • Teach daily living skills such as personal care, budgeting, cooking, time management, and community navigation
  • Support students in developing communication, social, and self‑advocacy skills
  • Utilize evidence‑based instructional strategies and differentiated instruction
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and maintain accurate documentation of student progress
  • Create a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Facilitate community‑based instruction when appropriate
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (Master’s preferred)
  • Valid state teaching certification in Special Education and CHRC
  • Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of transition planning and functional curriculum development
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with assistive technology and alternative communication systems
  • Training in behavior intervention strategies and data collection
  • Familiarity with transition services and community partnerships
