Design Manager - Bedford, Bedfordshire - Main Contractor (Design & Build)

A respected regional Main Contractor with a strong presence across Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties is seeking a Design Manager to join their expanding team. Based near Bedford, this contractor delivers a wide range of Design & Build, refurbishment and new‑build schemes and is recognised for its technical capability, collaborative culture and long‑standing client relationships.

You will join an established design function, working closely with pre‑construction, commercial teams and site delivery. Projects typically range from £5m-£20m and are located within roughly an hour of the Bedford office.

• Oversee and drive the full design process on Design & Build projects
• Coordinate architects, structural engineers, M&E consultants and specialist subcontractors
• Ensure design information is accurate, compliant, buildable and aligned with programme and cost plans
• Lead design reviews, value engineering workshops and risk management activities
• Manage design queries and ensure timely approvals
• Work flexibly between home, office and site

Hybrid working (office / home / site)

Hours:

8.30am - 5.00pm (1‑hour lunch)

Experienced Design Manager or Senior Design Manager from a Main Contractor or D&B background

OR an architect/engineer looking to transition into contractor‑side design management

Strong understanding of design coordination, technical review and construction methodology

Confident communicator, organised and able to manage multiple stakeholders and deadlines

Suitable backgrounds include:
