Staff Interpreter/Translator

Bedford City School District (BCSD) Staff Interpreter/Translator Services
Definition: BCSD staff with bilingual skills in Spanish, French or other languages to provide language interpretation and translation for students, staff and families in various educational settings as needed. For the purpose of this job description, interpretation is defined as spoken conversions of one language to another, and translation is defined as the written conversion of one language to another.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs oral interpretation during scheduled meetings such as conferences, IEP meetings, hearings, and/or other impromptu meetings or visits that need in-person interpreting/translation services.
- Assist in administering tests and/or assignments.
- Follow employee code of conduct and ethics including guidelines for confidentiality.
- Clearly provide a schedule of availability to necessary staff members.
- May interact individually or in a group with a student or parent for interpreting/translating as needed to decrease language barrier.
- Be willing to assist in situations needing an interpreter during the school day (planning time, break time, or unassigned time) and/or before or after school day with the acknowledgement of being compensated ($35.00 per hour, per the Master Agreement with BEA)
- Interpret and translate between two languages, one of which is English
- Perform interpretation and translation to assist in the development of students' academic related plans.
- Perform interpretation and translation to assist in the instruction of students, including reading, writing, and math skills
- Report to assigned work in a timely way on a consistent basis
- Be flexible to function in a variety of school and school related settings
- Follow instructions accurately included written, and oral directions
- Must be able to perform all of the relevant duties of the position with only indirect and general supervision
- Must be able to tactfully communicate in both oral and written forms; communicating thoughts, ideas, information and messages in English and a second language
- Requires the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information
- Must be able to prioritize work in order to meet deadlines and maintain schedules while being able to assist, as needed, an interpreting situation
