Bedford Public Schools Invites Applications For The Position Of Extend School Year Summer Program Special Education School Adjustment Counselor 7/6/26-7/30/26 Description
School adjustment counseling/school social work is a specialized area of practice. School Adjustment Counselors/School Social Workers assist students with mental health issues, behavioral issues, positive behavioral supports, academic and classroom support.
Responsibilities- Promote student motivation and engagement:
Individualize interventions-Plan appropriate Individualized Education Programs for student with disabilities-write social-emotional goals and accommodations. - Coordinate with lead teachers on management of student and classroom behavior-conduct observations and formulate behavior plans as needed.
- Monitor student progress-complete progress reports for each trimester/quarter according to student's social emotional goal.
- Improve students' communication and social skills-Teach and support social-emotional learning
- Assess student emotional and behavioral needs.
- Provide individual and group counseling
- Promote problem solving, anger management and conflict resolution.
- Reinforce positive coping skills and resilience
- Promote positive peer relationships and social problem solving
- Conduct risk assessments as needed to assist family with necessary interventions
- Make referrals to and help coordinate community services provided in school
- Monitor and effectively communicate with parents about student social emotional progress
- Help families understand their child's learning and mental health needs
- Connect families with community services providers when necessary
- Maintain regular communication with student's community resources in order to better provide wraparound services
- Attend evaluation team meetings, annuals, reconvene, manifestations, and other student-centered meetings as needed
- Enhance staff understanding and responsiveness to diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Consult with staff regularly in order to help enhance understanding of student needs
- Generate and interpret useful student and school outcome data
- Collect and analyze data on risk and protective factors related to student outcomes
- Provide crisis prevention and intervention services
- Participate in professional development opportunities to increase knowledge base and skills, as well as maintain licensure.
- Attend and participate in department meetings.
- Maintain the high level of confidentiality and professionalism expected of all faculty.
- Perform other related tasks or duties at the discretion of the Director of Special Education and/or Principal.
- Must possess the ability to:
Build positive relationships with students in support of their academic and social development. - Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of IEP goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
- Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
- A Master's degree with extensive course work and counseling.
- Massachusetts certification as a school adjustment counselor
- Experience in conducting elementary groups, play therapy and other forms of psychotherapy.
- Individual and group experience working with children and parents.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and national background check
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
