DescriptionThe Sheetfed Press Assistant will assist with the setup and operation of a printing press in coordination with the Press Operator. The role ensures each job runs according to customer specifications, meets deadlines, maintains quality control, reduces waste or press downtime, and follows departmental regulations and procedures to process customer jobs on time with specified quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Keep the feeder loaded with sheets of paper at all times.
- Airs, winds, or turns paper stock.
- Read and understand the job ticket, layout sheet, artwork, and other specifications before beginning an assigned job.
- Assist the Lead Press Operator with manual and machine tasks during the operation of a sheetfed printing press and other pressroom equipment.
- Assist with wash‑up and cleaning procedures.
- Assist in the setup and make‑ready of the printing press and other equipment.
- Hang plates, install blankets and packing, fill ink fountains, and mix fountain solutions at the correct pH; assist in the setup of coating or other in‑line finishing equipment.
- Record the quantity of ink used on the printed job.
- Check plates for visible imperfections and pressesheets for marks and abrasions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, EPA, and company safety rules.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.
- Keep an ongoing list of maintenance issues to be addressed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- 1–3 years of previous manufacturing experience preferred.
- Full comprehension in reading work instructions and business memos.
- Effective communication skills with all levels within the organization.
- Ability to use basic math skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, and critical thinking, to solve practical problems.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Be organized and able to plan, prioritize, and follow through on projects assigned with minimal supervision.
- Have basic computer skills.
- Use proper body mechanics with pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, squatting, kneeling, and bending.
- Push/pull and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Perform fine motor hand and arm movements, manual dexterity, and coordination.
- Maintain near visual acuity.
- Operate departmental equipment.
