Essential Job Functions

Works with and educates the general public with regards to enforcement of laws, rules, regulations and ordinances. Keeps current with FDA courses on food safety, foodborne illnesses, epidemiology, and attends Texas Environmental Health Association (TEHA) conferences and FDA classroom educational opportunities. Works rotating on‑call schedule inspecting temporary events or responding to calls from fire department or other city departments during nights, weekends, holidays and after hours.

Assists with preparing invoices for renewal of annual permits in a timely manner. Conducts routine inspections of food establishments, ensures health and safety of citizens through regular visits to businesses, properly conducts foodborne illness investigations, utilizes tablet computers and various software programs to complete inspection reports and maintain records. Investigates environmental complaints as assigned by Environmental Health Manager.

Other Job Functions

Relieves Administrative Assistant during periods of time off. Performs other duties as required. This position requires 100% on-site work. Required to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions, maybe subject to extreme temperature swings; will be required to work rotating weekends and after 5:00 p.m. during the normal work week; may be required to work Emergency occurrences after normal working hours.

Knowledge

Knowledge of principles and practices of environmental sanitation, and of state and federal laws pertaining to public health and its organizations, knowledge of state laws pertaining to retail food establishments.

Skills/Abilities

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; excellent writing and presentation skills; ability to speak and communicate with the public.

Physical Requirements

Constantly sees, writes, squats, climbs, drives, stoops, writes by hand; frequently operates a camera performs data entry, lifts and pushes objects weighing up to 25 lbs., pulls objects weighing up to 40 lbs., infrequently operates a fax machine.

Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalent or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university.

This position requires 100% on-site work. Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license with a good standing record preferred. Other state valid driver’s license equivalent to Texas Class C with a good standing record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s license. Must be able to acquire a driver’s license within 30 days of employment.

Provide copy of college transcript (official or unofficial). Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.
