Purpose

Provide technical expertise, planning, and execution support for instrumentation and control systems across the site. The incumbent maintains, troubleshoots, and improves plant instrumentation to ensure accurate measurement, control, and safeguarding of production processes. Responsibilities include analyzers, transmitters, control valves, monitoring systems, and associated infrastructure to optimize safety, reliability, and cost performance. The role supports site‑wide Mechanical Integrity and Reliability programs by ensuring instrumentation assets are designed, maintained, and upgraded in accordance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

The Instrumentation Specialist works closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Reliability teams to identify issues, recommend improvements, and implement sustainable solutions that enhance plant performance and business continuity.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities Instrumentation Strategy & Programs
  • Support the development and implementation of site‑wide instrumentation and analyzer strategies and PMs that maximize accuracy, reliability, and performance.
  • Recommend upgrades, replacements, and lifecycle plans for critical instrumentation assets.
  • Align instrumentation practices with reliability programs and long‑term business continuity goals.
Calibration & Compliance
  • Ensure all instrumentation, analyzers, and control devices are calibrated and documented per regulatory, industry, and corporate standards.
  • Maintain accurate calibration and compliance records for audits and inspections.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise on standards such as OSHA PSM, API, ISA, and other applicable requirements.
Reliability Analysis & Improvements
  • Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and other reliability methodologies for instrumentation‑related issues.
  • Identify recurring failure patterns and recommend sustainable corrective actions.
  • Participate in risk‑based maintenance planning for instrumentation systems.
Data Integrity & Digital Systems
  • Ensure instrumentation data accuracy for process monitoring, safety systems, and regulatory reporting.
  • Collaborate with IT, DCS/PLC, and historian administrators to optimize data management and integration.
  • Support digitalization initiatives that enhance predictive monitoring and advanced process control.
Collaboration & Technical Support
  • Work jointly with Reliability, Operations, Maintenance, Turnaround, and Project teams to provide instrumentation expertise.
  • Serve as a liaison with vendors and service providers to resolve technical issues and implement best practices.
  • Provide input during design, procurement, and installation of new instrumentation and analyzer systems.
Knowledge Sharing & Development
  • Support training and knowledge transfer for Operations and Maintenance personnel on instrumentation best practices.
  • Promote safe work practices and foster a culture of continuous improvement across the site.

Notable Working Conditions

Combination of office and chemical plant field work. Occasional travel required.

Education Requirements

Associate degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, Analyzer or equivalent technical experience in instrumentation and controls or analyzers.

Language Requirements

English

Background & Experience
  • 7+ years of experience in instrumentation, controls, or analyzer systems within a chemical, refining, or industrial plant environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise with process analyzers, transmitters, control valves, safety instrumented systems, and monitoring devices.
