Location:
This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to the Bay City Service Center located in Bay City, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
Job Responsibilities
The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for engineering and design to support the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and leads complex technical projects and may manage the work of lower level engineers and technicians as required.
A Senior Electrical Engineer in the Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) Substation Planning department is essentially responsible for owning their assigned substations. Responsibilities include short- & long-term capacity planning, short- & long-term reliability planning, assistance with failure events, responses to customer inquiries, engineering support of substation construction projects, and solving other complex problems involving LVD substations as they arise.
The Senior Electrical Engineer is also responsible to provide support to many other areas of the company including Substation Design, LVD Lines Planning and Design, Project Management, System Protection, HVD New Business & Capacity Planning, Economic Development, Rates, the Energy Solutions Management Group, and Interconnection Agreements & Programs. The Senior Electrical Engineer in LVD Substation Planning will also be highly involved with the entirety of the generator interconnection process, including review of generator interconnection applications and performing System Impact & Facilities Studies.
The Senior Electrical Engineer is expected to work with minimal supervision, help train & support other members of the group, and represent the company at both internal & customer meetings.
- Perform a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
- Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
- Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation
- Ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
- Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products and serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters. Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems
- Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes
- Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management
- Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies and provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
- Proficient in design and calculation software
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
- Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power)
- Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset
- Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
