Overview
The work environment is with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. This posting represents a multi-level posting for Transportation Generalist and Transportation Associate roles in Construction and Surveys. The position(s) will be filled in District 3A – Brainerd / Baxter with day shift, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Telework is not eligible.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment. This posting will be used to fill 2 positions in Construction/Surveys.
Responsibilities- For Transportation Generalist:
Examples of work include construction and survey-related duties. Construction duties include obtaining samples of materials, performing field tests for quality assurance, reading and interpreting plans, checking dimensions, documenting pay items, implementing inspection processes, monitoring contractor work, and assisting in ensuring materials meet specifications. - For Transportation Associate:
Examples of work include field testing of construction materials, inspecting contractor methods to meet plans and specifications, documenting data for contractor payment, and supporting routine survey activities.
The level for Transportation Generalist may be reached with one year of experience in contract administration, materials, surveys, or related areas, plus at least six months of survey-related experience. Education substitutions include a two-year Civil or Construction Technology degree or certain four-year degrees (Engineering, Land Surveying/Geomatics, etc.). You may be eligible if in the final year of a listed degree. Other requirements include fluency in English, a valid Class D Minnesota Driver’s License, and the ability to pass a Math and Reading Assessment Test if offered a contingent job offer.
Certifications include ability to obtain specific trainings within 12 months of hire (e.g., Aggregate Production, Grading/Base I, Concrete Field I, Bituminous Street I, ADA Inspection, Construction Site Management). For Transportation Associate level, similar English proficiency, Driver’s License, and Math/Reading assessment requirements apply, along with certifications to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications- Previous MnDOT experience as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
