Public Relations and Education Specialist

The Public Relations and Education Specialist supports digital access and education in the communities we serve by delivering inclusive technology and Internet training to members, employees, and community partners. The position leads in-person and virtual workshops, builds community relationships, and serves as a public-facing resource on digital literacy and online safety, with a focus on supporting seniors and first-time Internet users.

Working collaboratively with internal teams, the role develops clear, accessible training and messaging that promote Internet adoption, community engagement, and safe technology use.

* In addition to the above, this position will perform other work-related duties as assigned. These tasks do not meet the Americans with Disabilities Act definition of essential job functions and are usually less than 5% of time spent. However, these tasks still constitute important performance aspects of the job.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of computers, mobile devices, Internet services, and common workplace and consumer technology tools
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts, online safety, and fraud prevention
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and digital literacy education
  • Understanding of community outreach, public education, or member-focused programming
  • Awareness of accessibility considerations and inclusive learning practices
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills for in-person and virtual audiences
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in clear, simple, and approachable terms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Relationship-building skills with community partners, members, and internal teams
  • Training material development skills, including guides, handouts, and basic e-learning content
  • Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple programs and events
  • Basic data tracking and reporting skills for participation and program outcomes
  • Ability to engage diverse audiences, including seniors and individuals new to technology
  • Ability to create a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment
  • Ability to adapt training style and content to different skill levels and learning needs
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments (IT, Marketing, HR, Member Services)
  • Ability to represent the organization professionally in public and community settings
  • Ability to learn new technologies and products quickly and translate them into user-friendly education
  • Knowledge of company policies, procedures, products, services, and service locations.
  • Proficient in digital tools for both training (e-learning, presentations) and PR (media monitoring, social platforms).
  • Willingness to participate in community activities.
  • Ability to always display a high level of professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain efficient workflow.

Education and Experience:

Two or four-year degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Education, Adult Education, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Community Education, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience in training, communications, digital literacy education, or community outreach.

Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience as a corporate trainer, communications specialist, or similar hybrid role.
  • Strong knowledge of computers, workplace applications, and cybersecurity fundamentals.
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation, and writing skills, with the ability to translate technical topics into plain, engaging language. Proven ability to communicate with senior learners and develop effective training manuals for them.
  • Proficiency in digital tools for both training (e-learning, presentations) and PR (media monitoring, social platforms).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in training, IT, or cybersecurity (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Certified Technical Trainer).
