About this position:

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

The overall function of this position is to maintain and/or make basic repairs to a variety of mobile equipment and small equipment. This position is located in the Section 42 Unit 071 Mechanic Shop of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor

B. The incumbent must be self-motivated and able to perform duties with minimal supervision, also able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend continuing education classes and conferences as necessary.

Positions maintain, repair, and overhaul both light and heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience or training as a mechanic.


FUNCTION OF WORK
:

Perform routine preventive maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment.

:

Entry.

Direct from a Mechanic Supervisor or higher-level maintenance personnel.

JOB DISTINCTIONS
:

Differs from Trades Apprentice by the independent performance of routine maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment in a non-trainee capacity.

Differs from Mechanic 2 by the absence of independent responsibility for major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

45% Diagnose and repair electrical, computer, electronic, brake, fuel injection, A/C, heating systems, etc., understanding how these systems work and how non-mechanical systems affect mechanical operations. Use test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamo meters, exhaust analyzers, vacuum testers, ignition timing tools, tachometers, ammeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, and computerized scanners to locate defects and determine repair procedures.

30% Responsible for complete overhaul of systems and assemblies on various vehicles and equipment with gas and diesel engines, electrical, air conditioning, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, steering, and other mechanical features.

10% Perform field repairs on equipment such as draglines, dozers, graders, tractors, mowers, and other construction and heavy vehicles.

5% Service or repair mechanical power systems for moveable bridges, ferry boats, and maintain heavy-duty hoists and winches.

5% Provide instruction and assistance to Mechanics 1-3 and Trades Apprentices during major repairs. Prepare reports, parts orders, evaluations, inspections, leave slips, etc. Clean work areas.

5% Perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.
