The Southern University at New Orleans Police Department (SUNOPD) is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency. SUNOPD is a full‑service law enforcement agency staffed by professional, highly trained, commissioned officers 24 hours a day. The department’s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and enjoyable university experience and to further improve conditions in and around Southern University at New Orleans. Responsibilities include protecting lives and property through foot and mobile patrols; enforcing parking and traffic regulations; rendering emergency services;

investigating minor crimes; and making arrests when necessary.

Job Responsibilities
  • Protect lives and property through active foot and mobile patrols, enforcing laws and parking regulations, and investigating crimes.
  • Respond to emergencies and render assistance as required.
  • Prepare reports on activities.
  • Provide crowd and traffic control at special events; use force when necessary to arrest, restore order, or protect persons or property.
  • Provide first aid and emergency services.
  • Operate police network computers and dispatch officers in response to calls.
Qualifications
  • One year of law‑enforcement experience.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a current Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Possession of an active POST certification may be required.
  • Applicants with a felony conviction or who are under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief is granted.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to run, jump, stand for long periods, climb, crawl, carry, drag, and work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to change flat tires and operate a firearm with either hand.
  • Ability to work collegially and provide excellent customer service.
Position‑Specific Details

Appointment Type:
Probational appointment.

Work Schedule:

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
This position is non‑exempt under the provisions of the FLSA and may work 12‑hour shifts. It is subject to overtime, working weekends, holidays, shift work, and 24‑hour call.

Compensation: $41,350.40 annually.
