General SummaryThis position is the backbone of our kitchen and dining room services. It provides a variety of important food preparation, food storage and stock management, dining room set-up, kitchen and dining room cleaning. This person welcomes, serves and successfully interacts with a wide variety of dining room donors, guests, community members, and St. Vincent de Paul ("SVDP") staff. The specific assignments vary from week to week.
The personnel of the Kitchen/Dining Room Program of SVDP collaborates with all SVDP staff by embracing all works of charity and justice. All staff collaborate with other people of good will relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them SVDP sees the face of Christ. All personnel of the Shelter/Residential Programs participate actively in the homeless Continuum of Care to coordinate services, maximize guest benefit, and minimize duplication of effort.
Minimum QualificationsA. Education, Experience &
Certifications:
- High School Diploma is required
- Food Safety Certification is preferred
- One year of cooking experience preferred
- Work cooperatively with SVDP staff and homeless guests to accomplish mission goals.
- Must be able to meet schedule requirements as assigned
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment operation and maintenance
- Understanding of health department regulations and foot safety practices
- Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds
- Must be able to sit for long periods while working on a computer, or talking with guests and community members. Must be able to move around buildings and in the community
- Must be able to stoop, lift, and bend infrequently during the day
- Must be able to safely operate standard commercial kitchen equipment required for completion of meals.
- Fast‑paced environment requiring quick thinking and efficient movement
- Temperature variations from hot cooking areas to cold storage spaces (35 °F‑100 °F+)
- Exposure to various noise levels from kitchen equipment and communication
- Close‑quarter working conditions with other team members
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals and various food products
- Adherence to strict food safety and sanitation protocols
Job Duties
- Designated "cook" and is responsible for cooking the food for approximately 450 people
- Pulls from supplies all food items needed for the main dish and starts cooking meals
- Pulls the pans needed for meal, fills pans and sends pans of food to dining room
- Prepares and readies for pick‑up, the food that is to go out in bulk
- Cleans the tilt skillet and mops floor around the tilt skillet, cleans kitchen and washes dishes from the dining room
- Puts away clean dishes and pans
- Mops entire kitchen floor
- Designated vegetable person and is responsible for cooking the vegetable food for approximately people
- Pulls supplies needed for vegetable dishes and cooks vegetable dishes
- Pulls the pans needed for vegetable dishes, and fills pans for dining room service
- Provides supportive assistance to all other kitchen and cooking tasks, based on daily needs
- Prepares the serving line including putting the ware in the steam line, turning the warmer on, and counting plates
- Pulls and puts the desserts for approximately 350 people in pans for serving
- Pulls ice in the ice chest for the drink of the day
- Teaches the volunteers what serving sizes are for each item being served for the day
- Refills the serving line with the necessary food items being served for the day
- Cleans the line, glass and area around it. Sweeps and mops the floor behind the line.
- Designated "floater" person and is responsible for assisting on any kitchen/dining room task based on daily needs and assignment
- Is responsible for cleaning the cooker, making a list of all the food that is in the cooler, and throwing away any food that is not good
- Wipes off and cleans racks, sweeps and mops the cooler
- Helps receiving and thanking donors with food donations
- Driving, as directed and approved by the Kitchen/Dining Room Director
- Other duties as assigned
- Follows policy guidelines for time‑off request (sick, vacation)
- Follows policy guidelines for tardiness policy
