The Medical Laboratory Assistant Candidate is responsible for up‑front specimen handling and facilitating workflow in and out of the laboratory. Assists laboratory personnel with laboratory procedures. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks. Works under close supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Determine blood donor eligibility by performing related testing, evaluating donor/patient medical history, assisting physicians with special tests and procedures, recruiting blood donors, and completing appropriate records pertaining to donations in a manner that ensures donor confidentiality.
  • Participate in mobile and in‑house blood bank operations and maintain donor stations on a regular rotation. Separate blood components, pool platelets, and thaw frozen plasma for transfusion. Visit patients who have received blood during surgery to inform them about the hospital blood donation program.
  • Perform noncomplex testing (e.g., ESR) and directed testing (e.g., sweat testing) following SOPs when applicable.
  • Receive, organize, and prioritize specimens, investigate and ensure proper identification, and process specimens according to procedures (e.g., centrifuging and aliquoting). Sort and track specimens according to the appropriate performing laboratory, maintaining sample integrity. In the Blood Bank, verify labels, boxes, ship and prepare documents for recovered plasma and filter red blood cells to remove leukocytes.
  • Perform quality control, instrument maintenance and check procedures, and maintain accurate and complete records of daily activities. Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes.
  • Assist in the care and maintenance of the laboratory work area and equipment, adhere to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follow safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, and combine ethical judgment with technical skill within the policy and legal guidelines of the hospital and laboratory.
  • Coordinate, plan, and utilize time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of laboratory service customers. Maintain an inventory of supplies, request and order supplies as necessary, and avoid duplication of efforts.
  • Act as an intermediary between clients, physicians and laboratory technologists to obtain additional specimen information that is crucial to the accuracy of test results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Must obtain CLS – Laboratory Assistant license within 12 months of hire.
