Qualifications:

* Two years of licensed engineering experience, which includes possession of an electrical or mechanical engineering license plus one year of experience in design or maintenance of electrical or mechanical systems (pumping systems, gear systems, piping systems, control systems, backup power systems, etc.,); OR

* Six years of professional engineering experience, which includes four years of professional level electrical or mechanical engineering experience in design or maintenance of electrical or mechanical systems (pumping systems, gear systems, piping systems, control systems, backup power systems, etc.,)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:

Two years of licensed engineering experience; or

Six years of professional engineering experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.

A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.

There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.

NOTES:

Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.

Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.

Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. FUNCTION OF WORK:

Serves as a leader and departmental authority in either a broad area of engineering or in a narrow but intensely specialized field of engineering.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Expert.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Broad direction from an Engineer 7 or 8. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May exercise functional/project supervision over lower-level engineers, other professionals or engineering technicians.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Engineer 5 by the presence of designation as a Dual Career Ladder job.

Differs from Engineer 6 by the absence of responsibility for direct supervision over professional engineers.

The following is a list of duties and responsibilities for the Systems Movable Bridge Maintenance Expert (Engineer 6 DCL), in the Bridge Maintenance Unit (002) of the Bridge Maintenance Section (51) of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. To perform work, incumbent may be required to use a state vehicle for statewide travel, climb tall bridge towers, lift/remove heavy equipment covers and hatches, and occasionally work in hot, cold, or rainy weather.
