This position serves as the statewide technical expert for Louisiana's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), and HSIP sub‑programs such as the Local Road Safety Program (LRSP) and Safe Routes to Public Places (SRTPPP). The role involves identifying high‑potential safety improvement (PSI) locations, sections, and over‑represented crash types, including roadside obstacles that may pose safety risks to road users.
Activities include Stage O studies, local road safety plans, systemic studies, traffic safety records, tort reduction, and the development and implementation of safety projects and programs to address infrastructure, operations, and data‑planning strategies identified through the SHSP action plans at the statewide and regional levels.
- Willing to learn a data‑driven safety approach for identifying and prioritizing safety improvements and to educate others on these concepts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:
- Two years of licensed engineering experience in traffic engineering, highway safety, or transportation planning;
- Six years of professional engineering experience in traffic engineering, highway safety, or transportation.

Minimum QualificationsPossession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:
- Two years of licensed engineering experience;
- Six years of professional engineering experience.
- A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
- A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
- Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.
- Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
- Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET‑accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer’s license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.
- Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Job Duties- Prepares and reviews Highway Safety Feasibility Studies/Stage 0s and highway safety studies for inclusion in the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
- Develops and provides recommendations relative to HSIP project funding and budget allocations.
- Assists with pre‑ and post‑evaluations for the highway safety program.
- Assists with project‑focused safety performance measures.
- Manages engineering consultants and universities for safety studies and low‑cost safety improvement projects.
- Supports DOTD HQ staff, district offices, SHSP coalitions/teams, MPOs, elected officials, and consultants with developing project scope, budget, and schedule.
- Compensation: Bi‑weekly entry rate of $3,316.00 for this position. The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant.
