Environmental Engineer, Occupational Health & Safety
We are recruiting for a Safety Specialist/Engineer working at our Louisiana Station (LAS) cogeneration facility located in Baton Rouge, LA. The LAS site consists of two combustion turbines and generators with associated HRSGs, four conventional steam boilers and two steam turbines. This position will primarily be responsible for implementation and on‑going support of safety and health plans, policies, procedures and compliance programs.
Candidate should be able to support the site’s management team with strategic safety planning and program development to further improve the site’s performance. This position reports directly to the Facility Manager.
- Support site facility in implementing corporate safety programs.
- Conduct annual reviews of the safety procedures and recommend necessary improvements.
- Responsible for safety compliance for the Power Plant.
- Support development and implementation of plant annual safety plans, goals, and strategies for improving safety performance.
- Conduct periodic Health and Safety audits and prepare audit reports.
- Review safety incidents or deviations to ensure effective investigations focusing on cause and corrective measures are implemented and shared by all facilities.
- Communicate with regulatory agencies as necessary to address environmental reporting, deviations, and notices of non‑compliance.
- Develop, review, update, and train employees on applicable risk management and Emergency Response Plans.
- Conduct, manage, and track HS related training through the training website and other facility records.
- Maintain professional affiliations with HS organizations and other professionals to keep current with new regulations and good management practices.
- Strive to improve HS skills and knowledge.
- Ability to deal with complex safety situations.
- Self‑starter with high degree of initiative and ability to work independently.
- Adherence to Ethos corporate safety policies and directives.
- Ability to develop and present safety presentations in person to a large group.
- Capable of leading and attending committees internally and with external mutual aid partners.
- Commensurate experience/professional training and a demonstrated track record in developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies and procedures in an industrial setting.
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to have a hands‑on approach.
- Preferred experience working in a power plant or an industrial facility; overall experience, education and/or military service may be considered.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (industrial and/or safety related) preferred.
- Position requires periods of intense physical exertion, including walking, climbing, and lifting.
- Ability to lift and move material up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to climb and perform a function up to a 12‑ft ladder.
