Overview
Director of Children and Youth Ministries
January 31, 2026
Jefferson United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge is seeking a Director of Children and Youth Ministries. This is a part-time position with a starting salary of $22,000. The primary mission of the Director of Children and Youth Ministries will be to plan, coordinate, and implement the educational and fellowship activities of the JUMC Children’s Ministry with the goal of helping children grow spiritually and emotionally;
to plan, coordinate, and implement the educational, fellowship, and missional activities of the JUMC Youth Fellowship with the goal of helping youth grow spiritually and emotionally.
- Plan and LEAD weekly youth fellowship gatherings which are currently held on Sunday evenings;
- Plan and lead Sunday morning learning opportunities for youth if requested;
- Recruit and welcome new youth-aged members of JUMC;
- Recruit and train adult volunteers to work with youth;
- Work in concert with the pastor to plan a Youth led worship service on a designated Youth Sunday;
- Organize a Youth mission trip;
- Plan and oversee a Youth Week, a week-long event in the summer designed to grow the youth group;
- Keep parents and youth informed of events and meetings;
- Organize graduation celebration;
- Establish a children’s ministry team to assist in planning and implementing children’s ministry at JUMC;
- Recruit and train volunteers to lead or assist with children’s programming;
- Select and provide United Methodist approved curriculum for Children’s Church, Sunday School, Preschool/nursery and other programs and order such curriculum as needed;
- Attend Sunday morning activities and lead or assist children’s Sunday morning programs as needed;
- Oversee the 345 program, a middle school group that meets monthly;
- Coordinate weekly children’s messages offered during 10:30am worship service;
- Coordinate the nursery schedule and ensure adequate staffing, finding substitutes if needed;
- Coordinate Back-to-School events (Blessing of the Backpacks, Bibles for 2nd Graders);
- Plan and coordinate confirmation program and confirmation Sunday events;
- Plan and LEAD Vacation Bible School;
- Plan and coordinate Trunk or Treat and Spring Fling;
- Work with pastor to plan and direct the Children’s Christmas Pageant;
- Attend scheduled staff meetings;
- Purchase supplies for children’s programs and maintain the supplies in the ministry closet;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Proven experience in teaching or mentoring children and/or youth.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire volunteers.
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with children, parents, volunteers, and church leadership.
- Experience with event planning and program development.
