Professor/Associate Professor in Hydrogen Energy
AboutThe Role
The Faculty of Engineering & Design is seeking a dynamic Professor or Associate Professor of Hydrogen Energy to lead research and education in this area. Hydrogen has been identified as a cornerstone of the UK’s net‑zero strategy, with a commitment to deploy up to 10 GW of low‑carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, at least half from electrolytic sources. This ambition is supported by major government initiatives, including the Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM), the Low‑Carbon Hydrogen Standard (LCHS), and the development of hydrogen transport and storage networks.
Bath’s leadership in hydrogen research is exemplified by two flagship initiatives:
- UK‑HyRES (Hydrogen Research for Energy System) – a UKRI national research hub addressing fundamental challenges in hydrogen production, storage, and integration within future energy systems.
- GW‑SHIFT (Great Western Supercluster of Hydrogen Impact for Future Technologies) – a regional partnership led by Bath, bringing together industry and academia across the South West and South Wales to accelerate hydrogen innovation and demonstration.
These initiatives position Bath as a national and regional leader in hydrogen research and innovation.
About YouThe post holder will have:
- A sustained record of high‑quality research and funding in hydrogen energy.
- Evidence of leadership in innovation and collaboration, and the capability to translate research to deliver real‑world impact.
- Proven ability to score major funding.
- Strategic vision and capacity to lead large‑scale initiatives.
- Commitment to mentoring and institutional development.
You will be based in the Hydrogen Hub and one of the four departments within the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Bath offers interdisciplinary coverage across hydrogen storage and production, propulsion, electrochemistry, power systems, renewables, and applications in aviation and automotive systems. You will be a kind and culturally aware leader who fosters an environment in which every individual is valued and respected, regardless of background or identity.
You will actively encourage your team to adapt and evolve, promoting a culture of openness and inclusivity.
This role is offered on a full‑time (36.5 hours per week) open‑ended basis.
