Job Description & How to Apply Below
Overview

Are you a psychology, criminology or sociology graduate looking for a meaningful role where you can make a difference to young people’s lives? This Teaching Assistant position offers the chance to support secondary students with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), autism and learning disabilities. Your understanding of behaviour, motivation and development can help you connect with children who may struggle in a traditional classroom.

You’ll be working in partnership with a well-regarded school in Bath that is known for its inclusive ethos. The most recent OFSTED report praised the strong pastoral support and positive relationships between staff and pupils, highlighting the school’s commitment to helping every child feel valued and understood. This makes it a welcoming place for both staff and students, where support staff are seen as an essential part of the team.

The role involves supporting Key Stage 3 and 4 students on a full-time basis. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm, at a rate of £13.70 per hour. The position starts as soon as possible and, after a 16-week settling-in period, has the potential to become permanent. We are not necessarily looking for people with direct classroom experience — what matters most is your personality, motivations and values.

If you are calm, resilient and passionate about helping vulnerable young people thrive, this could be the perfect role for you. Graduates, youth workers, sports coaches, support workers and anyone looking for a purposeful career change are encouraged to apply. This is more than a job — it’s an opportunity to have a real impact on young lives while building your own skills and experience in education.

Responsibilities
  • Support Key Stage 3 and 4 students on a full-time basis in a school setting.
  • Support students with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), autism and learning disabilities.
  • Help create a safe and supportive learning environment using active listening, empathy, patience and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to support inclusion and pastoral care.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils to support engagement and wellbeing.
Requirements and compliance
  • Graduate in psychology, criminology or sociology (or a related field).
  • Understanding of behaviour, motivation and development, and the ability to apply this in supporting pupils.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: active listening, empathy, patience and problem-solving.
  • Willingness to work with pupils who may struggle in a traditional classroom; not necessarily requiring direct classroom experience.
  • Hours:

Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm; salary £13.70 per hour.
  • DBS check or willingness to have one processed on your behalf; compliance with DfE safeguarding checks.
  • This position involves work with children or vulnerable adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
  • This is a temporary position, unless stated otherwise; salary/pay rate will depend on skills and experience.
