Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath wishes to appoint academics to strengthen our rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group. We are looking for academics at the Lecturer and Senior Lecturer level, with expertise in Natural Language Processing, Reinforcement Learning, and/or AI Security, to lead research, teach, and help with running the department.

The AI & Machine Learning Research Group has grown significantly and includes experienced AI researchers such as Prof Nello Cristianini, Prof Özgür Şimşek, and Prof Mike Tipping, alongside a strong group of early career researchers. The research is organized into four groups:
Artificial Intelligence, Human‑Computer Interaction, Mathematical Foundations, and Visual Computing. We collaborate across the university and beyond, working with partners such as Google AI, Deep Mind, the FCA, ONS, NHS, and universities like São Paulo, Zhejiang, and Tsinghua.

Work with colleagues, students, and researchers to develop and publish papers; apply for research funding; make research available to society through industry collaboration, spin‑outs, charities, policy influence, talks, and demonstrations.

Design and deliver teaching materials for lectures, tutorials, and labs; educate and inspire students, delivering an engaging and supportive experience.

Assume internal roles to help the department run smoothly, e.g., student placements, ethics processes, recruitment and admissions, or leading a research team.

• Training for an HEA fellowship qualification:
  New Lecturers are enrolled on the Pathway to HEA Fellowship. Senior Lecturers also have the option. Completion results in a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
• Mentoring:
  All staff receive a mentor to support day‑to‑day progress.
• Opportunities to progress, manage and lead within a growing team.
• Opportunities to collaborate and build on networks across entertainment, sport, healthcare, and technology.

Ideal candidates hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a UG degree or equivalent experience. Membership in a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert, FHEA) are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate substantial research experience, emerging or established research profile with funding success, deep subject understanding, teaching experience at UG/PG levels, strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, and the ability to form positive collaborations.

Senior Lecturers must also exhibit academic leadership and a clear research vision. Both roles require excellent organisational and administrative skills, a commitment to excellence in research and teaching, student experience, and ethical professional conduct. Senior Lecturers must maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, learning technologies, and a strong research strategy.
