ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (EOP):
The State University of New York's Educational Opportunity Program provides access, academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for succeeding in college but who may not have otherwise been offered admission. Available primarily to full-time, matriculated students, the program supports students throughout their college careers within the University.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Individuals filling tutoring positions are expected to be flexible and willing to have their work assignments adjusted in order to support the Equal Opportunity Program efforts. This staff member will provide support to EOP students in courses ranging from basic Math curriculum through higher level courses. All of these activities are designed to improve student academic success and retention.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tutors EOP students in basic level Math courses as well as higher levels as needed.
Attend tutor training sessions as available.
Maintains basic student tutoring records to assist in reporting of student progress.
Undertakes other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Associate's degree required. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Math, Math education preferred. If degree is not in content area, or related field with college-level course work; relevant work experience in related field is required.
Experience
Two years of experience (part- or full-time) postsecondary tutoring preferred. Experience in a customer facing role required. Experience in K-12 education acceptable.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Provides individual and group tutoring in support of instructional programs for students in the Equal Opportunity Program. May participate in developing tutoring resource materials. Provides tutoring to EOP students in open lab/self paced settings including clarification of course assignments, lectures and tests. Works with students individually or in small groups to select and use resource material and/or lab equipment most appropriate to demonstrate study units/workbook assignments.
Maintains records of students tutored. Performs related duties as required.
Ability to provide quality customer service. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as the ability to establish and maintain positive learning environments for students and collaborative relationships with colleagues. Incumbent must be mindful of and develop solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically.
Additional Information:
SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a temporary, full-time position for the EOP 3 week summer program in August. Tutors are paid standard tutor rate as determined by college and EOP Grant standards. Occasional evening and weekend hours. This position is in-person with no remote work options. Official transcripts required upon hire.
