Undergraduate Research Assistant

Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate student to join our Material Assessment and Qualification (MatAQ) research group. The successful candidate will work on the testing, characterization, and evaluation of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for accelerator-relevant applications at Fermilab (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory). This role offers hands-on experience in materials testing, data analysis, scientific reporting, and opportunities for a summer internship at Fermilab and possible conference participation.

• Experimental Design & Setup: Design and set up materials for mechanical property tests.
• Data processing: Run Python-based code for testing data processing.
• Software Development: Contribute to the development of data processing tools for sensitivity analysis and data processing.
• Documentation & Reporting: Prepare technical reports summarizing results, methods, and progress.
• Dissemination of Results: Support the preparation of posters and presentations, with opportunities to present findings at national conferences.
• Gain hands-on research experience in both experimental and computational methods.
• Opportunity to co-author reports and presentations.
• Opportunity to work with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab).
• Possibility to present research at regional and national conferences.
• Mentorship and collaboration within an active research group.

• Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Strong interest in experimental methods, numerical modeling, and/or software development.
• Basic proficiency in programming (Python, MATLAB, or similar) preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

$14 / hour
