About the Role

The Senior Director of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) is responsible for all aspects of the leadership and management of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's (FNAL, Fermilab, or Laboratory) ES&H division, whose mission is to enable the Laboratory's science mission and operations through integrated and effective environment, safety, and health programs. The ES&H Senior Director reports directly to the Deputy Director for Operations (DDO)/Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is a member of the Laboratory's Senior Leadership Team.

The ES&H Senior Director represents the Laboratory's environmental, safety, and health programs to the FNAL community, Fermi Forward Discovery Group (FFDG), the Department of Energy, other DOE laboratories, concerned regulatory agencies, and the general public.

The ES&H Senior Director also serves as the Laboratory's Chief Safety Officer (CSO), and in this role, reports to the Laboratory Director to advise on institutional elements of ES&H risk identification, mitigation and proactive solutions. As part of the Laboratory's Senior Leadership Team, the ES&H Senior Director/CSO is responsible for developing Laboratory strategy, operating plans and policies to ensure the Laboratory can safely and sustainably achieve scientific mission, project, and operations success.

The ES&H Senior Director leads a highly visible Laboratory-wide environmental, safety, and health program of best practices, certifications, standards, guidance, procedures, and management systems that enables the scientific mission, ensures compliance with applicable ES&H requirements, and promotes a safe and healthy workplace.

The ES&H Senior Director anticipates and accommodates unique mission needs as they evolve and recommends ES&H policy and protocols to the Laboratory Director and Senior Leadership Team.

The ES&H Senior Director is expected to partner with Laboratory line management to enable and foster a proactive and integrated safety culture that promotes an urgent need for critical self-evaluation and sustained improvement in the safe accomplishment of all mission, project and operations objectives.

What your day-to-day as a Senior Director, Environmental, Safety and Health at Fermilab will look like
  • Serve as the principal strategic advisor and provide proactive leadership and planning for all ES&H needs to the Laboratory Director and all senior laboratory leaders.
  • Partner with line management and Laboratory stakeholders to provide leadership to enable a strong safety culture and that is based on the principals of Integrated Safety Management (ISM).
  • Lead, manage and continually develop the ES&H Division, an approximately 100 member organization with an annual budget of approximately $20 million that includes the following functional areas:
    Radiation Protection, Accelerator Safety, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety, Electrical Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Occupational Health and Safety, Hazardous and Radioactive Waste Management, Injury Prevention, and ES&H Training.
  • Evaluate the performance of the ES&H organization and develop management and improvement plans accordingly. Responsible for the financial viability and success of the ES&H organization. Responsible for committing resources with limited review by senior management.
  • Anticipate, develop, implement and monitor ES&H programs, policies, standards and protocols that are protective and enable FNAL's scientific mission, which will be achieved by having a keen awareness, interest, and understanding of the Laboratory's unique scientific mission.
  • Partner with line management to drive identification of Laboratory ES&H risks and deploy appropriate risk mitigation plans across all operations.
  • Provide leadership to the laboratory in support of FNAL's Worker Safety and Health Plan (WSHP).
  • Promote continuous improvement in workplace health and safety and environmental protection and be an active partner with the Laboratory's Work Planning and Control (WPC) program to help ensure safe, effective, and efficient mission, projects, and operations.
  • Participate in both internal and external reviews on various aspects of safety at FNAL and other laboratories in the DOE complex.
  • Champion major initiatives, lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
