Position: Biomedical Scientist (Biochemistry) - Fixed Term

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust now has an opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist within our biochemistry department to provide maternity cover for a fixed term of 9 months. Our diagnostic services are on two sites, with our main automated laboratory and specialist assays based at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke, and our essential service laboratory at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.

In addition we support 2 community hospitals and 3 independent hospitals, providing care to over 500,000 patients.

The Hampshire Hospital Laboratories were accredited to ISO
15189:2012 standards in 2014 and have maintained that accreditation to date.

Our Opportunity

Within Biochemistry we now have a permanent vacancy for:
Biomedical Scientist (Band
5)
candidates must be qualified to BSc level and have HCPC registration.

We are committed to the training and development of our staff and actively encourage staff to develop their careers, IBMS Certificate and Diplomas, external courses and management qualifications. The department is accredited as a training laboratory by the IBMS for both registration and specialist portfolios.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Work flexibly to provide a service that is in the best interests of the department.
  • Be competent to work unsupervised in the laboratory and rotate through sections within the department to develop a multi-skilled and flexible approach.
  • Assess and interpret test results.
  • Responsible for the operational maintenance of laboratory equipment and environment.
  • Participate in all required internal & external quality assurance schemes.
  • Take appropriate action should the quality assurance systems be outside acceptable limits.
  • Assist the senior BMS staff with the development of the Blood Sciences services.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of working practices, laboratory protocols and SOPs.
  • Support the effective processing of the department workload.
  • Reception, preparation, and processing of specimens.
  • Process the workload to the required high standard, whilst ensuring adherence to Trust and departmental policies, protocols and procedures, applying professional judgement and knowledge within their boundaries.
  • Take part in the 24/7 shift roster in Biochemistry after initial training.

The post holder will be competent to work independently in all areas of the laboratory and be able to work as an autonomous practitioner.
