Our Water specialists work together worldwide to find innovative solutions to the management of water, providing technical expertise and solutions for projects in hydraulic modelling, sustainable drainage systems, mains infrastructure design, non‑infrastructure design, and hydrology & water resources.

Job Responsibilities
  • Undertake technical and feasibility studies to appraise practicability of solutions in potable water, foul water, surface water and attenuation requirements, including appropriate calculations.
  • Produce designs of water infrastructure such as pump systems and pipe networks with safety in design, including creating a Designer’s Risk Assessment document.
  • Produce technical engineering drawings including plans, sections and typical details.
  • Undertake numerical analysis using computer‑based programmes to assist with the study of potable, surface and wastewater systems.
  • Keep up‑to‑date with regulatory legislation and guidelines that may affect design work.
  • Work with other team members to undertake technical work, site work, and project management.
  • Participate in site visits to develop a wider understanding of how designs are implemented.
Qualifications & Eligibility
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade ‘C/4’ or above, including Mathematics & English.
  • Three A‑Levels (or equivalent such as a BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering) including Maths and a physical science at grade ‘C’ or above – essential for level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.
  • Some work experience or shadowing in an engineering environment is an advantage.
  • Demonstrates an interest and a desire to pursue a career in traffic engineering.
  • Shows aptitude towards software‑based engineering and drawing, e.g. CAD and similar 3D software.
  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on‑the‑job learning and training opportunities.
  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Can think methodically to design, plan and organise parts of projects.
  • English language proficiency, with excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports.
On the Job Support & Learning

When an apprentice starts at AECOM, we pair them with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects and business development tasks, supporting any technical queries. Apprentices receive flexibility to work on a range of projects across our service offerings and technical specialisms, establishing areas of interest and building a sustainability grounding for career advancement.

We provide external training in Civil Engineering Technician (Level 3) and an Apprentice ADVANCE programme that includes instructor‑led sessions, networking events, and the opportunity to pursue professional qualifications (e.g., Eng Tech, IEng with ICE).
