Utility Arborist – Thames Valley –
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks
Base location:
Reading, Slough, West London or Basingstoke. The role is mobile and predominantly field‑based, requiring the home base to be within 30 minutes of one of the listed depots.
Salary: £29,504 – £34,757 (dependent on experience) plus a range of benefits:
- 37 hour working week
- London weighting allowance if based in Slough or London
- Up to £4,442 for overtime and up to £3,820 for standby – potential extra £8,262 per year (subject to qualifications)
- Full PPE and tools supplied
- Access to a company vehicle

About the RoleOur network must remain in optimal condition to minimise power‑cut risk and keep the public safe. You will be part of a cyclical tree‑cutting programme, working with a highly skilled team to manage trees and vegetation near the distribution network. Safety is paramount: you will evaluate, prepare, and carry out tree‑cutting works on a variety of sites.
Responsibilities- Maintain trees and vegetation away from overhead lines and equipment.
- Use the latest technology and tools for regular maintenance and emergency work.
- Collaborate with the in‑house tree‑cutting team to ensure network safety.
- Identify and mitigate risks posed by trees during high‑wind events.
- Previous experience in tree cutting, forestry or arboriculture (similar capacity experience is considered).
- Relevant NPTC certificate units for chainsaw use, and qualification or certificates including NPTC UA.
- Enthusiasm, drive, flexible approach to work and ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Experience working with power lines and climbing is highly advantageous.
- High regard for safety and commitment to SSE’s safety culture.
Travel is required and candidates must hold a current driving licence.
