The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

The Opportunity

You will join Roche’s Institute of Human Biology, an organization within Roche Pharma R&D (pRED) whose goal is to harness and advance the use of human model systems in drug discovery and development, as well as personalized medicine. Our interdisciplinary research bridges academic and pharmaceutical research, connecting biologists, engineers, and data scientists.

We are offering an outstanding opportunity for a dedicated Postdoctoral Scientist to contribute to our mission of disrupting the traditional drug discovery process. You will be responsible for developing complex and highly integrated micro- and milli-fluidic technologies to automate the culture of organoids and other 3D in vitro systems, and increase the throughput of Microphysiological Systems (MPS).

Your work will be highly collaborative, developed in partnership with the Microtechnologies Group, other interdisciplinary teams at IHB, and our colleagues in pRED. As part of the Institute, you will directly benefit from existing IHB know-how and innovative technologies, including our world-class expertise in organoid technology, advanced phenotyping and phenoscaping capabilities, and leading-edge computational biology resources:

  • Invent and apply cutting-edge bioengineering approaches to develop innovative microfluidic technologies for culturing and analyzing 3D cell culture models, in collaboration with members of the Microtechnologies group.

  • Characterize the performance of these platforms with stem cells and organoids, and also using state-of-the‑art readouts, such as sequencing, microscopy, ELISAs, and metabolomics.

  • Integrate biosensors into these platforms to detect different types of analytes.

  • Collaborate with internal members of the Microtechnologies group and colleagues at IHB and pRED to drive projects focused on using or creating new Microphysiological Systems (MPS) for different organs, facilitating breakthroughs in understanding and treating complex, multifactorial diseases.

  • Generate high-quality results for peer‑reviewed publications and present findings at scientific conferences.

Who You Are:
  • Recent Ph.D. (completed within the last two years 2 years) in Bioengineering, Microengineering, or a closely related technical field.

  • Demonstrated innovation:
Evidenced by first-author/co-first author publications in top journals, reflecting significant scientific accomplishments.

  • Expertise in Microfluidics & Microfabrication:
Proven experience designing microfluidic devices/organ-on-a-chip technologies, familiarity with microfabrication (soft lithography, 3D printing, micromilling, laser cutting, embossing), and CAD design (AutoCAD, Fusion).

  • Advanced Cell Culture & Microscopy:
Direct experience with cell culture (ideally organoids/stem cells) and proficiency in various microscopy types and advanced image analysis.

  • Programming & Image Analysis

    Skills:

    Advanced programming (e.g., Python,

    C) and AI coding for image analysis are a plus.

  • Desirable

    Experience:

Knowledge of synthesizing hydrogels and other extracellular matrices is advantageous; experience integrating biosensors into microfluidic platforms is desirable.

Key Interpersonal and Professional Attributes:

  • Thrive in a multicultural, multinational environment; highly motivated and collaborative; prioritize team/organizational goals; be ambitious and capable of leadership, yet possess a solution-oriented mindset and resilience to contribute…
