Your Specific Responsibilities
The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Polk County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. The incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of their work.
Clinical services include Adult Health, Family Planning, OB, STD, HIV, and Immunizations. Incumbent’s duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Follow all local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Comply and perform within the scope of practice as defined by the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Prepare the clinic area and equipment.
- Interview clients to obtain complete health history and presenting complaints.
- Take vital signs and perform other screening tests.
- Follow up on abnormal and late lab reports.
- Administer medications as ordered by physician/APRN or under medical protocol and guidelines.
- Make appropriate referrals and assist clients to make necessary arrangements.
- Maintain accurate records and reports.
- Provide screening for HIV, counseling, education, and referrals for medical evaluation and other support services.
- Document and maintain accurate data entry into the client Electronic Health Record.
- Work with PFS pharmaceutical system to order and receive medications, maintain inventory, and notify supervisor of discrepancies.
- Work independently to provide services to clients under protocol in Family Planning, STD, and/or TB as assigned.
Flexes to Meet the Needs of the Clinic
- Assist physicians and APRNs as needed.
- Interpret, educate, and reinforce the provider’s plan of care for the client.
- Collect specimens for laboratory tests and interpret results.
- Assess immunization status of all clients and immunize according to current standards.
- Enter immunization information into Florida Shots.
Case Management
- Assess needs and plan with families to meet these needs.
- Provide nursing care and educate/counsel clients and families according to assessed needs.
- Provide emotional support to clients and families.
- Coordinate with physicians and community agencies to ensure continuity of care.
- Review records for accuracy and completeness for quality improvement audits.
- Facilitate case management of families with staff, Medicaid HMOs, and/or insurance companies.
- Coordinate with HMOs regarding appropriate referral services.
Other duties
- Participate in staff and in-service educational programs.
- Assist with inventory of supplies, medications, and vaccines.
- Travel to and cover other clinics within the county as staffing needs indicate.
- Monitor temperature controls and record on appropriate logs for refrigerators and freezers per protocol.
- Maintain time/attendance/travel/EARs records.
- Maintain and increase competency through educational materials and classes.
- Assist in orientation of new personnel and volunteers.
- Assist with preceptorship of students assigned to the clinic.
- Assist with supervision as a charge nurse of the clinical staff and clinic as assigned by the Sr. CHN Supervisor.
- This position may serve clients who speak languages other than English and may require interpreter duties if bilingual.
