Saint Francis Hospital Nurse Externship program is an excellent opportunity for nursing students to gain hands‑on clinical experience while supporting our exceptional nursing teams. This role allows students to strengthen their clinical skills, enhance patient care knowledge, and prepare for a successful transition into professional nursing practice. This is a developmental program for nursing students who want to develop multiple and varied clinical skills in a multiple nursing specialties.
This position requires participation in a guided training and development program aligned to the scope outlines by the State‑specific Board of Nursing.
Mandatory Nurse Extern New Hire Orientation

Friday, May 29, 2026, 2025 8:00 am - 4:00 pm CST or Friday, June 19, 2026, 2025 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Education Requirement:
Must have successfully completed a Fundamentals of Nursing course in an accredited nursing program at the time of application submission.Transcript Requirement:
An unofficial transcript must be uploaded and submitted at the time of application to verify completion of the Fundamentals of Nursing course. Incomplete applications will not be considered.Work Commitment Requirement:
Nurse Externs are required to commit to working a minimum of two (2) 12-hour shifts per month throughout the duration of the externship program.
All Nurse Extern I employees begin their externship on a Medical‑Surgical (Med Surg) unit
, working closely with the nursing team to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care.
- Assisting nursing staff with daily patient care activities
- Assisting patients with hygiene, mobility, and comfort measures
- Supporting nurses with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Maintaining a clean and organized patient environment
- Collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure exceptional patient outcomes
- Minimum of two (2) twelve‑hour shifts per month
- Scheduling is based on departmental needs and individual availability
- Gain valuable clinical experience in a hospital setting
- Work alongside experienced nurses and mentors
- Build a foundation for transition into a Registered Nurse role upon graduation
