Probation Officer I – Juvenile Justice Center (Job Number: 2044)
Probation Officer I (PO I) is an entry level position. The responsibilities and expectations of this position progress in concert with the training and experience received. Upon successful completion of all training requirements, performance standards and six (6) months employment the PO I will be at the full performance level as a Senior Intake Officer.
General PurposeProvides guidance and supervision to youth who are adjudicated and made wards of the Oklahoma County Juvenile Division of the District Court in a manner consistent with the Oklahoma State Statutes, American Correctional Association (ACA) Standards, OCJB Policy and Procedure, and best practices.
SupervisionWorks under the direct supervision of the Probation Supervisor or designee as directed. This position does not supervise other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assists the Court, District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, youth and their family by presenting a thoroughly developed dispositional study to establish the youth’s conditions of probation and individual treatment and service plan.
- Plans are developed by utilizing information gained from assessments, interviews with the youth and their family, and the youth’s risk to reoffend and identified programmatic needs.
- Attends all court hearings associated with the youth’s term of probation and is prepared to inform the court as required.
- Continues to provide progress updates of the youth and makes appropriate recommendations throughout the term of probation supervision.
- Assists the Court, District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office and the OCJB in maintaining public safety and accountability of assigned youth by supporting enforcement of court order probation conditions.
- Ensures the court is informed of violations by providing a quick response through probation levels of supervision and recommending modifications to the youth’s individual treatment and service plan.
- May conduct visits with the youth in the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center (OCJDC).
- Maintains accurate and current documentation of activities associated with guidance and supervision.
- Maintains contact with assigned youth according to supervision levels by conducting visits at home, school, office, and via telephone.
- Remains available twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week by telephone to respond to needs of youth and families.
- Assists in developing community partners by working with OCJB employees, law enforcement, and community service agencies/placement facilities.
- Complies with assigned and approved work schedule, Oklahoma County employee rules, OCJB policies and procedures, and training requirements.
- May serve as an interviewer in the hiring and promotional selection process as designated.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
- Serves as a representative of the OCJB in activities designed to improve community partnerships and operational practices.
- Provides youth educational programs or engages in community or civic engagement activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education/experience that totals four (4) years. Preference for candidates with undergraduate credits in social science, mental health, law enforcement, corrections, and/or education.
- Experience: Work experience and/or a documented student internship in the social science, mental health, law enforcement, corrections and/or education field. Preference for such candidates.
