Posts are available across NICS Departments and Agencies throughout Northern Ireland.
You must be willing to work in any NICS Department or location, subject to business need.
Staff Officer Accountant is the first level of middle management within the NICS accountancy profession. You will work within one of nine Northern Ireland Government Departments or their agencies, contributing to financial reporting, governance, planning and performance.
Key responsibilitiesWhile duties vary depending on department and business need, typical responsibilities include:
- Analysing financial data to support decision-making
- In-year budget management, profiling, monitoring and variance analysis
- Producing monthly and quarterly management accounts
- Preparing Annual Reports and Accounts in line with IFRS, HM Treasury and Department of Finance guidance
- Liaising with internal and external auditors, including the Northern Ireland Audit Office
- Advising on financial systems, controls and best practice
- Supporting corporate governance and risk management
- Managing financial processing functions
- Leading and developing staff, including trainee accountants
Have successfully passed final professional examinations and met practical experience requirements for full membership of one of the following professional bodies (or be expected to attain full membership by 15 September 2026):
- Chartered Accountants Ireland
- Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland
- Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
- Chartered Institute of Management Accountants
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
- Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy
- Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland
Relevant or equivalent qualifications will be considered.
ExperienceAt least one year’s experience (within the last five years) in a finance-related environment in one or more of the following areas:
- Financial planning and budgeting
- Financial accounting or auditing
- Forensic accounting or insolvency-related work
- Management accounting and cost analysis
- Investment finance
- Treasury management
- Corporate governance, including risk management
- Development or implementation of financial systems
