Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and committed Consultant Breast Radiologist within our well‑established NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP). This role offers an excellent work‑life balance in one of the UK’s most beautiful and affordable regions.

• Director of Breast Screening – oversee quality and delivery of the local NHS Breast Screening Programme, working closely with public health, service managers and clinical teams.
• Symptomatic and screening breast imaging – mammography, ultrasound, MRI and image‑guided procedures.
• Supportive multidisciplinary team – experienced radiographers, advanced practitioners and admin staff.
• Optional on‑call – largely outsourced overnight, promoting sustainable working patterns.

The Breast Imaging Unit operates across Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital, alongside mobile screening units. Recent investment has enhanced our digital mammography, ultrasound systems and SECTRA PACS. The screening programme is high performing with excellent uptake and patient feedback.

We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, along with community health premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

You will be part of a supportive multidisciplinary team with experienced radiographers, advanced practitioners and admin staff. On‑call is optional and largely outsourced overnight, promoting sustainable working patterns.

• MB ChB (or equivalent)
• FRCR (or equivalent)
• On the GMC specialist register for Clinical Radiology with a current license to practice
• Fellowship or additional training in Breast Imaging
• Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR‑equivalent programme
• Broad radiology skills – plain film, US, CT and MR
• Experience in breast screening and QA processes
• Leadership experience or training relevant to screening programme management

• Teaching or training qualifications
• Experience of teaching clinical skills
• Computer‐, PACS and VR software literate
• Experience of supervising trainees
• Publications of audit results and research in peer‑reviewed journals
• Participation in clinical or laboratory research projects
• UK professional registration
