PositionSummary
The Apprentice Mechanic is responsible for determining and performing required repairs on Transit Buses, Specialized Buses, Route Supervisors Vehicles and Service Trucks under the guidance of the Mechanic. The Apprentice Mechanic must ensure vehicle availability, maintain safe operating condition, and provide written documentation of repairs to meet Company, Contractual and Ministry of Transportation of Ontario requirements.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities- Ensures all vehicles are maintained in a safe operating condition and schedule Preventative Maintenance (PM) as per the PM Program Schedule.
- Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions (Engine, Transmission, Air Conditioning, Electrical) with computer diagnostic equipment, pressure gauges.
- Inspects all vehicle components and repairs defects in accordance with Ministry of Transportation of Ontario regulations.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, lubricating equipment.
- Adjusts and relines brakes on all vehicles.
- Uses hoists and hydraulic jacks.
- Diagnoses and repairs electronic fuel injection systems.
- Performs engine maintenance, including replacement of parts such as pistons, bearings, liners.
- Repairs and adjusts driver’s seats, passenger seats, doors, windows.
- Installs and repairs accessories as required.
- Disassembles and overhauls transmissions, differential units and engines as needed.
- Conducts front-end alignments.
- Performs tire work (changing, balancing, etc.) to ensure safe tires on all buses and equipment.
- Responds to safety‑concern situations immediately.
- Assists other mechanics on difficult tasks and co‑worker requests.
- Performs farebox repairs.
- Performs test drives to diagnose or verify vehicle functionality under Mechanic guidance.
- Completes scheduled safety inspections per Ministry of Transportation of Ontario under Mechanic guidance.
- Completes associated paperwork after each vehicle repair.
- Maintains a safe, clean work area and focuses on safety to reduce injury risk.
- Demonstrates cooperative attitude with employees and supervisors, promoting Company values.
- Maintains professional demeanor and appearance, following uniform, grooming and hygiene standards.
- Demonstrates punctual attendance in compliance with Company policies.
- Attends required in‑service training, safety meetings, and other mandatory meetings.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.
The Apprentice Mechanic works in a workshop environment with occasional field visits, requiring long periods of standing, walking, crouching, bending, repetitive arm use, hand‑wrist motion, and carrying equipment. The position may involve outside weather conditions; wet, humid, or adverse weather exposure. Protective eye wear, safety gloves, safety shoes, and proper breathing apparatus must be worn at all times.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Automotive Repair (S) Mechanic’s certificate preferred.
- Valid G Ontario Driver’s License, preferably B or C with Z (Airbrakes) endorsement.
- Minimum of 3 years of driving with an acceptable driving record.
- Valid Truck and Coach (T &
C) mechanic’s certificate, or equivalent experience considered.
- Knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair methods.
- Knowledge of WHMIS requirements.
- Ability to write clear, concise work orders and complete documentation.
- Approved minimum standard hand/power tools (Metric and Standard).
- Understanding of hand and power tools.
- Ability to read and understand electrical, air, hydraulic, and mechanical schematics.
