The OpportunityThe Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department is comprised of three Branches:
Solid Waste Operations, Solid Waste Management Policy and Planning, and Environmental Risk Management and Compliance. Overall, this department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. The Environmental Risk Management and Compliance Branch aims to minimize environmental risk associated with growth and corporate infrastructure, including source water protection, climate change strategy, sustainable development strategy, contaminated site response, sewer use by-law, spill response, groundwater/surface water monitoring and investigations, and site plan reviews.
This department also develops and maintains strategies that promote circular economy and environmental sustainability, including waste diversion programs, sustainable waste management strategy, public outreach, and education.
The Senior Environmental Officer (SEO) is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental legislation within the City of Barrie. This position is engaged in wastewater, surface water and groundwater quality management for the City and enforces the Sewer Use By-law, Site Alteration By-law and Waste By-law for City of Barrie residents and industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities through compliance inspections, investigations and sampling.
Additionally, this position provides technical guidance regarding environmentally related approvals and permits. On a rotating basis, the SEO participates in an on‑call roster and responds to spills that may cause adverse effects to the natural environment and human health.

- Three (3) year University Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Engineering or a related discipline

- Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Demonstrated ability to:
- interpret and understand building plans, road infrastructure maps with respect to structural systems, plumbing systems, sewers, creeks, watershed boundaries, lot grading, etc.
- maintain records in a regulatory enforcement capacity with the ability to submit evidence in court
- conduct statistical analysis and laboratory and sampling techniques
