The Traffic Services Branch is a branch within the Development Services Department. This branch is responsible for traffic administration, roadway illumination, roadway traffic signage, project signing, traffic control signals, pavement markings, traffic safety and guide rails and railway crossing maintenance. This branch also administers the annual traffic calming program (i.e., speed cushions), and reviews the collision database for all reported collisions in Barrie.
In addition to traffic duties, this branch is also responsible for all Right-of-Way activities, including issuing municipal consents and Right-of-Way Activity permits, conducting Right-of-Way Activity inspections where required, and taking charge of the City's Graffiti Abatement Program.
The Corporation of the City of Barrie has a work experience placement opportunity for two (2) students currently enrolled in an Advanced College Program to assist in the Traffic Services Branch of the Development and Traffic Services Department.
The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:
- The inspections of municipal infrastructure installations, including concrete, asphalt and sewers to ensure they are built in accordance with the designated specifications
- The inspections of traffic protection plans and detours to ensure they are in accordance with Book 7 and the approved permit
- Maintain records which document quality control issues
- Contractor audits as it relates to work site and traffic safety
- Communicate with homeowners and other affected stakeholders during construction activities on the city right-of-way

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized College or University *
- Completed at least one (1) year of a related post-secondary education program at a recognized College or University
- Enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program , preferably enrolled in a Civil Engineering Technology Program or a closely related Civil program, and returning to full-time studies
* Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
Basic understanding of municipal infrastructure, including sewers and roads
Basic engineering, survey and drafting skills
Strong computer skills, including a good working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office and Auto Cad
Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Willing to work outside
Well-organized self-starter with the ability to work well without close supervision
Conditions of Employment- Valid Class “G” Drivers License with a good driving record
- Vehicle for transportation while at work (travel reimbursement will be provided)
- CSA-approved safety footwear in good condition
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check *
* Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Location: Operations Center, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
