The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Northern, based in Barnstaple, provides core Healthcare services to a population of more than 615,000 people living in North, Mid and East Devon, and the surrounding area. The Trust also provides a range of specialist services, across the UK and Europe. The Trust has transfusion laboratories in the Northern (Barnstaple) and Eastern (Exeter) sites.
The Northern site is set in the midst of glorious Devon countryside and close to the northern coastline, with its stunning beaches. The city boasts excellent links by road and rail to the rest of the country, Europe and beyond, whilst being within easy reaches of picturesque Dartmoor and Exmoor scenery.
The laboratory has strong links with the University of Exeter Medical School through the Eastern site, providing a comprehensive Research and Development analytical service, both supporting trials and translating diagnostic research into clinical practice. The laboratory is at the forefront of some of the most exciting new research, particularly in the areas of diabetes and gastroenterology autoimmunity.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated person to join our team of dedicated professionals at the Northern site in Barnstaple in the Haematology and Transfusion departments. The department is housed in a purpose-built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy but friendly team. We currently have Horiba Yumizens Full Blood Count analysers, Stago Star Max 2 Coagulation analysers, Immucor ECHO Blood Grouping analysers and a Sebia analyser for Haemoglobinopathy Screening.
The Blood Sciences laboratories have accreditation by UKAS under ISO 15189 and MHRA compliance. We have electronic blood tracking vein to vein using the Haemonetics Blood Track system. Our electronic patient record system (EPIC) works with the laboratory information management system (Safe Trace Tx) to provide an automated process for test, component and blood product orders and results. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.
We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientists. You should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to organise and motivate staff. The appointee will assist the members of the Blood Sciences management team in providing a comprehensive, cost effective, and high-quality laboratory service to the Trust.
Candidates must be HCPC registered with technical competence and knowledge in Blood Transfusion and Haematology.
Candidates are expected to hold an IBMS specialistportfolio in haematology and transfusion science, or demonstrate an equivalent UK recognised qualification and minimum 2 years level of experience and knowledge working in an NHS medical laboratory.
The successful applicant will have experience of working as part of a Laboratory team and will be a highly organised. They will possess good keyboard skills, an excellent telephone manner and should be highly literate and numerate. Excellent communications skills are essential for this post. Following suitable training they will be required to partake in the 24/7 shift service.
Working Pattern:37.5 hours per week with out of hours and weekend working
