The Royal Devon is seeking to appoint a consultant to our department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology based at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) in Barnstaple.
Main duties of the jobAs a key member of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, you will be working with an exceptional team to help our patients to stay healthy, when they need it most.

We deliver a wide range of emergency, specialist and general medical services through North Devon District Hospital and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford). Alongside our two acute hospitals, we provide integrated health and social care services across a variety of settings, including community inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, and within peoples own homes. We also offer primary care services, a range of specialist community services, and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC).
Our state‑of‑the‑art equipment, leading technologies and strong links to local universities put us at the forefront of research and innovations, enabling us to provide world‑class care to our local communities.
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was established in April 2022, bringing together the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust. The departments of Gastroenterology and Hepatology are now integrated providing core services to a population of 615,000 and specialist services to a wider population across the South West Peninsula. Consultants deliver face‑to‑face, and virtual care from both Barnstaple and Exeter sites.
The Gastroenterology department is friendly, successful and ambitious. The Trust offers a supportive team of IBD, hepatology and nutrition specialist nurses and nationally recognised surgical teams. We have an electronic patient record (EPIC), a multi‑million‑pound research facility, a significant development budget and ambitious plans for the future. New consultants are encouraged to develop innovative services and pursue research and teaching interests.
Relocation is supported with a generous financial incentive and relocation package.
Consultants will be expected to deliver clinical care, contribute to service development, support research projects, and engage in teaching activities. Specific duties include:
- Provide face‑to‑face and virtual clinical care in gastroenterology and hepatology.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case reviews.
- Support and lead research initiatives and teaching activities.
- Contribute to service improvement and development projects.
