We are recruiting a Non-Ferrous Gate Trade Operative to join our team at our Barnsley site.
This role is primarily responsible for serving customers who bring non-ferrous materials onto site to weigh in and sell. You will act as a key point of contact, ensuring materials are assessed accurately, customers are dealt with professionally and transactions are processed efficiently.
When gate trade activity is quieter, you will be expected to support wider non-ferrous yard operations, assisting with sorting, grading and general site duties.
This is a hands‑on, customer‑facing position requiring strong communication skills, integrity and a solid understanding of non-ferrous materials.
Key Responsibilities Gate Trade Duties- Serve customers bringing non-ferrous materials onto site
- Inspect and assess materials for correct grading
- Direct customers safely through the designated trade area
- Liaise with the weighbridge and Scrap Inspector to ensure accurate recording
- Maintain clear and professional communication with customers
- Ensure transactions are handled in line with company procedures
- Monitor for contamination or non‑conforming materials
- Assist with sorting and segregating non-ferrous materials
- Support stockpile management and grade integrity
- Maintain housekeeping standards across the non-ferrous area
- Assist supervisors with general operational tasks as required
- Report hazards, defects or non-compliant materials
- Enforce site PPE requirements for customers and visitors
- Maintain vigilance around vehicle and plant movements
- Follow site Health & Safety policies and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Support compliance with environmental permit conditions
- Report unsafe behaviour or operational concerns immediately
- Experience with in metal recycling or a similar industrial environment
- Good knowledge of non-ferrous metal grades (e.g. copper, brass, aluminium)
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Confident and professional manner
- High level of integrity and attention to detail
- Experience in a customer-facing yard or trade counter role
- Basic IT skills for recording transactions
- Approachable and professional
- Assertive when challenging non-compliant materials
- Flexible and willing to support wider yard operations
- Reliable and trustworthy
- Competitive hourly rate (dependent on experience)
- Overtime paid after 40 hours per week
