We are recruiting a Non-Ferrous Scrap Inspector to join our team at our Barnsley site.
Barnsley operates as a ferrous and non-ferrous metals site, and this role will focus specifically on the inspection, grading and quality control of non-ferrous materials. This is a critical position responsible for protecting product quality, maintaining grade integrity and safeguarding site profitability.
When not undertaking inspection duties, you will be expected to support wider non-ferrous yard operations, assisting with sorting, segregation and general operative tasks.
This role requires strong product knowledge, attention to detail and the confidence to challenge non-conforming materials.
Key Responsibilities
Primary – Inspection & Quality Control:
- Inspect incoming and outgoing non-ferrous materials
- Accurately identify and confirm metal grades (e.g. copper, brass, aluminium, stainless steel)
- Identify contamination, hazardous or non-conforming materials
- Liaise with the weighbridge and gate trade operatives to ensure accurate documentation
- Monitor stockpiles to maintain grade integrity
- Support resolution of material quality queries or disputes
- Maintain clear and accurate inspection records
Secondary – Yard Support Duties:
- Assist with sorting and segregating non-ferrous materials
- Support stockpile organisation and housekeeping standards
- Work alongside material handlers and supervisors to maintain throughput
- Undertake general operative duties within the non-ferrous area as required
Quality & Commercial Responsibility
- Protect the business from financial loss through incorrect grading
- Ensure outgoing materials meet customer specifications
- Escalate quality concerns to site management promptly
- Support continuous improvement in material control processes
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times
- Maintain vigilance around plant and vehicle movements
- Follow all Health & Safety procedures and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Support compliance with site environmental and operational standards
- Report hazards, near misses or unsafe behaviours
Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of non-ferrous metal grades
- Experience with in metal recycling or a similar industrial environment
- High attention to detail
- Confidence in challenging non-compliant materials
- Previous experience in a quality control or inspection role
- Understanding of customer grade specifications
