About The PostAre you passionate about delivering high-quality waste services and leading teams to success? As Assistant Operations Manager, you’ll supervise and support our front‑line workforce, ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and with a focus on customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare weekly workload and labour deployment programmes, allocating vehicles and plant to meet service and business needs.
- Complete quality audits and monitor on‑site work to ensure all scheduled and reactive tasks are completed to a high standard.
- Operate within a performance management framework, setting targets and addressing areas of poor performance.
- Use ICT solutions to deliver services and maintain accurate electronic records.
- Carry out risk assessments, investigate incidents/accidents, and ensure health and safety compliance.
- Support business planning by reviewing services for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Undertake operational duties (including driving) when required for business continuity.
- Conduct health and safety spot checks and contribute to staff training and safety briefings.
- Manage a team of up to 30 staff, providing direction, support, and guidance on recruitment, induction, training, welfare, and discipline.
- Respond to customer enquiries and complaints in line with corporate frameworks.
- Liaise with stakeholders and attend relevant meetings, providing regular updates.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory requirements.
- Level 4 or equivalent vocational/technical qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Full Category C LGV driver licence.
- IOSH Managing Safety (or willingness to undertake).
- Significant experience managing front‑line/logistically based teams.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety procedures and relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team, with a commitment to continuous professional development.
- Willingness to work flexibly to meet operational needs.
- Commitment to Barnsley Council’s values and behaviours.
- Willingness to comply with the Drug & Alcohol Testing Procedure (safety critical role).
