AboutThe Role
We are looking for passionate and skilled Health Visitors and School Nurses to join our Public Health Nursing Service in Barnsley. In this role you will deliver the Healthy Child Programme, providing evidence-based care that promotes health, reduces inequalities, and safeguards children, young people, and families. You will work closely with families to assess health needs, plan and implement interventions, and provide support for those with complex needs.
This includes risk management, safeguarding responsibilities, and contributing to multi-agency working to achieve positive outcomes. You will also lead public health initiatives, mentor colleagues and students, and ensure high standards of clinical governance. Experienced practitioners will take a lead role in managing complex cases, supervising staff, and developing innovative approaches to care.
You will be a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) with a Level 6 or above qualification and a commitment to continuous professional development. Experience of working in a community setting, delivering public health programmes, and safeguarding vulnerable children and families is required. You should be confident managing complex situations, working collaboratively with other professionals, and using evidence-based practice to improve health outcomes.
Strong communication, the ability to work autonomously, and excellent organisational skills are essential. For experienced practitioners, significant post-qualification experience and the ability to mentor and lead others are desirable.
- Qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) with Level 6 or above.
- Experience in community settings, public health programmes, and safeguarding vulnerable children and families.
- Strong communication, autonomy, planning and prioritisation skills.
- Mentoring skills and ability to manage complex cases (for experienced practitioners).
- Flexible approach, willingness to travel, and alignment with Council values and behaviours.

The post requires Enhanced DBS checks and, if you have lived overseas in the last five years, an overseas criminal records check may be required. A Police Vetting check is also required.
