Our Health in Justice service line is expanding into non‑custodial healthcare, delivering a person‑centred approach to assess mental health and neurodiversity requirements and redirect individuals to the most appropriate channel. We have an exciting opportunity for a Liaison and Diversion Practitioner to join our team in South Yorkshire.
As a Liaison & Diversion Practitioner you will work autonomously in police detention cells and court, identifying and responding to requests for screening and assessment of people with identified health needs in contact with the criminal justice system.
LocationBased predominantly in Barnsley, with some travel across the South Yorkshire region. A driving licence is required.
HoursShifts covering Monday to Sunday.
SalaryFull‑time, 37.5 hours per week. Salary £43,609 to £49,174 depending on experience.
Key requirementsLegal right to work in the UK. Offers subject to additional vetting and security checks.
Main duties of the job- Part of an extended Liaison & Diversion service team.
- Work autonomously in court and police detention cells, identifying and responding to requests for screening and assessment of people with identified health needs in contact with the criminal justice system.
- Use validated tools to assess for a range of health needs, and use that information to inform decision‑making and facilitate diversion within and out of the criminal justice pathway, creating a clear individualised care plan.

Qualifications, skills and experience required- Qualified Registered Mental Nurse, Mental Health Social Worker or Occupational Therapist with current registration with the relevant professional body.
- Substantial evidence of continuing professional development and post‑registration training.
- Experience of psychosocial interventions and awareness of substance misuse.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to gain appropriate level of consent.
- Understanding of clinical governance, health and safety, QOF, EBP and national standards.
- Knowledge of evidence‑based practice, health promotion, NICE guidelines and pharmacology.
- Knowledge of current legislation relating to community mental health provision and forensic psychiatry.
Post subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975; disclosure to DBS will be required to check for any previous criminal convictions.
