This is an at-will position.
Under general supervision, the Lifeguard will ensure safe use of the pool, aquatic facility and general safety of children; supervise conduct of pool patrons; enforce swimming pool rules and respond to emergency situations as required; administer First Aid, CPR, and perform other lifesaving activities. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining and working safely with materials and equipment, maintaining accurate files and records, and performing other related duties as assigned.
Must be 15 years of age or older and able to pass training course pre-requisites. No prior experience required, but highly desirable. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training must be completed by accepted candidates. Contact the Community Services Department at for more information and costs. Candidates must pass provided class prior to final hire.
Note: Work Permit Required at time of hire if under age 18.
Performance Exam: Must pass a mandatory swimming test (Lifeguard applicants) and interview selection process.

- Assists the Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager in the managing of the operations of the City aquatics facilities.
- Promotes a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
- Assures consistent enforcement of rules and policies.
- Controls pool operations to assure that safety and water quality rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the facility and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
- Assures that all safety rules and regulations are observed.
- Perform lifeguard and instructor duties as needed.
- Assures cleanliness of pool and facility.
- Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of swimming pool patrons.
- Watches activities in the water, on Water Slides, and on swimming pool decks for individuals who may need assistance or guidance.
- Enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions for municipal aquatics facilities.
- Reports complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activities, and resolves issues within scope of authority.
- Assist with planning Special Events; organizes, promotes and evaluates diversified special events, alternative activities, and special programs suited to the needs of participants and potential participants.
- Evaluates programs and events for effectiveness and participation levels.
- May register and check-in pool patrons.
- May complete monetary transactions including deposits.
- Tracks services provided, monitors results, and generates operational reports as needed.
- Orders supplies as needed for daily programs.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Banning and the constituent population by providing excellent customer service.
- Promotes the City goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records and City information.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.

- Lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid, water rescue methods and procedures, and standard resuscitation measures.
- Record keeping and file maintenance principles and procedures.
- Understand and interpret recreation issues, regulations, and state and Federal laws.
- Manage and control recreation activities and participants.
- Promote a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
- Monitor pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards.
- Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands.
- Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard and specialized software.
